Future-Ready UAS: Preparing Ethiopian Students for the Digital Age with VR/AR
Ethiopian UAS graduates are poised to lead Africa’s digital revolution, and VR/AR are key to their preparation. These tools are transforming students into innovators ready to tackle a tech-driven world.
In 2024, Ethiopian Technical University (ETU) launched a VR internship program with Ethio Telecom, as reported by Addis Standard. Students use VR to simulate network installations, gaining skills that match industry demands. “They’re solving real problems before they even graduate,” said Solomon Getachew, an ETU instructor. Separately, Adama Science and Technology University partnered with the ICT Park in Addis Ababa to roll out AR-based manufacturing simulations, preparing students for Ethiopia’s growing industrial sector.
The country’s tech boom fuels this momentum. The 2024 5G rollout in cities like Addis Ababa and Mekelle, covered by Bloomberg, signals Ethiopia’s digital ascent, with UAS at the forefront. Keeping curricula current remains a challenge, but collaborations—like the UAS-Ministry of Innovation and Technology pact signed this year—are bridging the gap. VR/AR are ensuring graduates are future-ready.
MaDE-for-UASs: Driving the Change
The MaDE-for-UASs project drives this effort by integrating VR/AR into UAS programs, training students in digital skills through MaDE Centers, and forging industry ties. By aligning education with Ethiopia’s tech ambitions, the project is shaping a workforce for the digital age.
“The future belongs to those who build it—VR and AR give our students that power.“
