Shaping Higher Education Program Delivery

Welcome to the MaDE-for-UASs Project Website. MaDE-for-UASs—Methodology and Didactic Education for Universities of Applied Sciences—is a bold, three-year collaboration (2024–2027), funded by the European Union through the Erasmus+ programme, aimed at revolutionizing higher education in Ethiopia.

The project bridges academia and industry by equipping lecturers with practical skills and innovative teaching methods—including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and simulations. Led by a European–Ethiopian consortium, MaDE-for-UASs operates two flagship MaDE centres, develops modern curricula and open tools, and works with industry partners (including the already-formed National Resonance Group) so graduates are better prepared for the World of Work.

Practice gaps weaken applied teaching

The challenge

Ethiopia’s shift toward Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) requires lecturers who can teach from current, hands-on industry practice—not theory alone. Too often, programmes lack regular access to real workplaces, so students and teachers cannot safely rehearse the technical processes that define the World of Work.

These gaps show up across technical and applied programmes: limited industrial exposure for academic staff, classrooms that stay abstract when processes are dangerous or capital-intensive, and uneven pathways that connect universities with employers who need job-ready graduates.

Major challenges

  • Limited industrial placements and authentic practice opportunities for UAS lecturers
  • Theory-heavy programme delivery that underprepares graduates for plant-floor work
  • Insufficient safe, scalable environments to rehearse high-risk technical procedures
  • Weak or uneven academia–industry linkages for skills and curriculum design
  • Unequal access to modern equipment, labs, and World-of-Work learning resources
  • Pressure on graduate employability when teaching cannot mirror real industry processes

What MaDE-for-UASs brings to this challenge

MaDE-for-UASs answers the practice gap with a full system for applied teaching: European–Ethiopian co-design of VR/AR and simulation didactics, two operational flagship centres, cascade Training of Trainers, and an active industry–university council so lecturers can rehearse industrial processes safely before they teach them.

Instead of one-off workshops, the project is building durable infrastructure, open learning products, and networks that outlive the grant window (2024–2027) and scale across Ethiopia’s Universities of Applied Sciences.

Who and what the project is changing

MaDE-for-UASs drives lasting change across Ethiopia’s Universities of Applied Sciences: better-prepared lecturers, safer industrial practice for students, stronger employer links, and open tools other institutions can reuse after 2027.

Impact already runs from classroom practice to national dialogue—European exchange and operational XR labs feed master-trainer cascades, updated courses, and the National Resonance Group (formed 2025) as a standing industry–university platform.
